Cohort analysis now supports custom breakdowns

One of the most requested features has finally landed: cohort analysis with custom breakdowns.

Until now, GrowPanel's cohort reports grouped customers by their first payment date – the classic cohort view that shows you how revenue and retention evolve over time for each monthly (or quarterly, or yearly) cohort. That's still the default, and it's still incredibly useful for understanding customer lifecycle patterns.

But sometimes you need a different lens.

Breaking cohorts by what matters to you

Starting today, you can group your cohort analysis by:

  • Currency – See how USD customers retain compared to EUR or GBP customers
  • Country – Compare retention across geographies
  • Market – Group by regions like North America, DACH, Nordics, APAC, etc.
  • Plan – Understand which pricing tiers have the stickiest customers
  • Billing frequency – Monthly vs annual subscribers, side by side
  • Payment method – Card vs invoice vs ACH
  • Industry, company size, channel – If you track these on your customers
  • Custom variables – Any attribute you've added to your customer records

The cohort table still works exactly as before: rows are your cohort groups, columns are time periods since first payment. But now "cohort group" can mean whatever dimension makes sense for your analysis.

Why this matters

Classic date-based cohorts answer the question: "How are customers who signed up in March doing compared to customers who signed up in April?"

Custom breakdowns answer a different question: "How do enterprise customers retain compared to SMB customers?" or "Is our churn problem concentrated in a specific geography?"

Both questions matter. Now you can answer both in the same report.

A quick example

Say you're a B2B SaaS with customers across Europe and the US. You've noticed overall retention is slipping, but you're not sure where the problem is.

With currency breakdown, you might discover that your EUR customers have significantly worse Month 3 retention than USD customers. That's a signal – maybe your product-market fit is weaker in Europe, or maybe there's a support gap, or maybe pricing isn't right for that market.

Without this breakdown, you'd just see "retention is declining" and have no idea where to dig.

How to use it

In any cohort report, you'll now see a breakdown selector in the toolbar. The default is "By first payment date" (the classic view), but you can switch to any of the available dimensions.

The cohort table, retention percentages, and charts all update to reflect your chosen grouping. Filters still work too – so you can, for example, look at currency breakdown but only for customers on your Pro plan.

Built on the same engine

This feature uses the same underlying cohort calculation that's always powered GrowPanel's retention analysis. The math is identical – we're just changing what defines a "cohort."

That means you get the same accuracy, the same MRR-weighted retention metrics, and the same visual clarity you're used to.

What's next

This is part of a broader push to make GrowPanel's reports more flexible without sacrificing simplicity. The cohort breakdown joins similar capabilities we've added to MRR, subscribers, ARPA, and other reports.

If you have ideas for other breakdown dimensions or analysis angles you'd find useful, I'd love to hear them. Just reply to this post or drop me an email.

Happy analyzing!
